A Woolly Wellness basket not just for Mother's Day

Attractive crochet basket for Mum on Mother's Day, for bits and pieces in the bathroom, for your jewellery or hair bands, for your craft projects and so on...

If you prefer a puristic style, forget the bobble stitch and instead of making bobbles, work in double crochet.

Materials required :

Abbreviations:

R                      -           row/round

st(s)                 -           stitch(es)

ch                    -           chain

t-ch                  -           turning chain

dc                    -           double crochet

bo                    -           bobble made from 5 treble crochet

tr                     -           treble crochet

sl st                  -           slip stitch

Advice on technique:

The basket is crocheted in several sections. These are later sewn together.

The t-ch at the end of every row is not counted as a stitch.

How to crochet bobbles

Wollness04_comp5f2a696584d00

Start as if you were about to crochet a treble.

1. Yarn round hook, insert the hook through the st of the previous row, bring the yarn through the st to the front of the work. You should now have 3 loops on the crochet hook.

2. Yarn round hook, then draw the yarn through the first two loops on the hook.

3. Yarn round hook, insert the hook into the same st as before, bring the yarn through the st to the front of the work. You should now have 4 loops on the crochet hook.

4. Yarn round hook, then draw the yarn through the first two loops on the hook.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 three times, until you have 6 loops on the hook.

6. Yarn round hook, then draw the yarn though all the loops.

Tip: Pull the yarn behind the bobble securely, so that the bobble has an attractive curve standing out on the front of the work.

Do not cut off yarn!

Border

Wollness08_comp5f2a6aefa7f62

Work 32 dc along the left side, 2 dc into the last st on the left side. Crochet 26 dc along the original chain and 2 dc into the last st of the chain. Now work 32 dc along the right side and end the row with a sl st into the last st of the right side. (The border is now worked in dc along the three sides of the crochet project!)

Cut off the yarn, leaving a 50 cm length. (In this way you can decide later whether you want to sew the sections together with this yarn. You can always cut off the yarn and sew it up later.)

Repeat Step 1 once more.

Tip: The markers on this image indicate where you should work the dc.

Step 2 - Handles (2 x)

Wollness14_comp5f2a6ba076f5e

Cast on 28 ch.

Starting from the 2nd st from the hook, work as follows
1st – 5th R: 27 dc, t-ch

Border

Work 4 dc along the left side, 2 dc into the last st on the left side. 26 dc along the original chain, 2 dc into the last st of the chain. Now work 4 dc along the right side and end the row with a sl st into the last st of the right side. Cut off the yarn, leaving a length of 50 cm.

Repeat Step 2 once more.

Place the handles completely on the narrow sides of the basket above the little heart. Make sure that upper edges are flush with each other. Pin both sections in place and sew them together securely.

Step 3 - Longer side sections (2 x)

Cast on 42 ch. Starting from the 2nd st from the hook, work as follows:
1st – 33rd R: 41 dc, t-ch

Border

Work 32 dc along the left side, 2 dc into the last st on the left side. 40 dc along the original chain, 2 dc into the last st of the chain. A further 32 dc along the right side and end the row with a sl st into the last st of the right side. Cut off the yarn, leaving a length of 50 cm.

Repeat Step 3 once more.

Step 4 - Base (1 x):

Cast on 42 ch.

Starting from the 2nd st from the hook, work as follows:
1st– 27th R: 41 dc, t-ch

Border

Work 26 dc along the left side, 2 dc into the last st on the left side. 40 dc along the original chain, 2 dc into the last st of the chain. A further 26 dc along the right side and end the row with a sl st into the last st of the right side.

Cut off the yarn, leaving a length of 150 cm.

Step 5 – Sewing on the base

Wollness11_comp5f2a6e3a0297e

Wollness15_comp5f2a6f17a3584

The sections are sewn together using the long yarn left on the base for this purpose.

Place a long side section on the upper edge of the base and sew these together from right to left. Sew only through the back loop of each stitch on the adjoining rows on the base and side sections. By sewing into the back rather than the front loops of the stitches, you produce an attractive decorative edge for the outside of the bag (see image).

Now place one narrow side of the basket with heart to the wrong side of the base (the points of the hearts point towards the base!) and sew them securely together in the same way.

The second longer side is also sewn on to the original chain on the base by this method. Finally sew the second narrow side of the basket with heart to the wrong side of the base.

Step 6 - Sewing the sides together

Wollness16_comp5f2a6f3e30431

Fold the side section upwards. The bobbles and the sewn-on handles should be on the outside. Using the remaining ends of yarn, now sew the sides securely to each other. This time sew through all the loops of the stitches on the adjacent edges. As the basket is rather soft and pliable, this gives it a little bit more stability.

Sew all the yarn ends neatly into the interior of the basket and now you can take great pleasure in your lovely new woolly wellness basket.
