DIY instruction: Crochet coasters

Inspiration for using up left-over fabrics

Materials required:

  • Fabric remnants, e.g. Mille Fleurs
  • Crochet hook No. 5
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1

First, with scissors cut 1 cm wide strips from the fabric. Do not cut right through to the end of the piece of fabric; instead, stop cutting 1 cm before the edge of the fabric, turn the piece of fabric and cut the next strip 1 cm from the strip you have already cut. Continue this method of cutting strips until you have one continuous strip of fabric.

For a coaster with a diameter of about 21.5 cm you will need a piece of fabric of not more than approx. 150 x 50 cm.

If a strip tears or there is not sufficient fabric, you can attach another fabric strip with a double knot.

Step 2

With the crochet hook make 4 chain stitches and close the chain into a ring with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Work 10 single crochet into the chain stitch ring. Close the round with a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

Step 3

Round 2:

Crochet one chain stitch.

Then make 2 single crochet into every second stitch in the previous round.

Close the round with a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

Step 4

Round 3: Crochet one chain stitch.

In every third stitch crochet 2 fixed stitches.

Close the round with a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

Continue this method of increasing stitches until you have completed 10 rounds. Pass the loose end through the stitches with the crochet hook to finish off neatly.

Step 5

The loop:

Take a strip of the remaining fabric and leaving about 5 cm of fabric at each end and crochet a strip in chain stitch about 8 cm long. Draw the ends of the fabric one after the other through the edge of the coaster, knot them and with the crochet hook pass the remaining ends through the stitches to neaten the work.
