Sewing instructions: Oven glove

A practical helper in the kitchen: An oven glove with sewn-in Thermolam. So you can quickly and easily take cakes, casseroles and baking trays from the oven without burning your hands.

Within just a few hours you will have sewn your practical kitchen helper. For this sewing project you need only a little fabric and can perfectly sew your favourite fabrics. The oven gloves are not just an eye-catcher in any kitchen, they are also practical.

We show you step by step how you can sew one or more oven gloves in no time.

Material

Note: Instead of Thermolam you can also use felt. However, then there is no guarantee that you will not burn your fingers! Thermolam is the better choice in any case!

Working steps

Fold both pieces of fabric and the Thermolam. The decorative sides of your fabric lie both inwards. Now lay the pattern on the fabric and transfer it. Take your pair of scissors and cut the oven gloves out. The pattern includes seam allowances. If you cut the folded fabrics and Thermolam, you will get two opposite glove parts.

Note: In the oven glove pattern the seam allowance is included. You can lay the pattern on the left sides of the fabric and mark or transfer straight away.

You now have six cut out fabric pieces in front of you:  Two pieces of outer fabric, two pieces of lining and two pieces of Thermolam.
Iron the fabric pieces, then they can be sewn together better and more precisely.

Sew the two Thermolam pieces on the respective left sides of the outer glove . Here you can give free rein to your creativity. I secure the Thermolam well with pins and then sew diamond shapes with the sewing machine on the right side of the outer glove. You can also sew wavy lines or set a pretty decorative stitch. The main thing is that the Thermolam is well sewn to the outer glove.

Now insert the glove lining, right sides together and sew close to the edge both sides together. Here you can leave the lower part open where you slide your hand in. Then cut the seam allowance back slightly.

Now sew the outer glove together. Again, the two pieces of fabric are sewn right sides together and the lower part remains open.

Turn the outer glove to the right. The glove filling is not turned, but is pushed into the outer glove. Should it be a little too wide, cut the seam allowance back further.

Tip: As the outer glove will be turned, but not the inner glove, it may be that it is a little too wide at the end. Sew it together a few centimetres narrower than the outer glove.

Next, the bias binding is sewn to the opening of the oven glove and thus the outer and inner glove are stitched together.

If you are concerned that the bias binding might slip, stick it firmly with wonder tape to the glove.

Place the bias binding once around the opening of the oven glove. Fold it inwards and fix it (again) with pins. Leave a piece of bias binding protruding. We will sew the loop from this later.

Sew the bias binding on your oven glove firmly. You are getting close to finishing, sew the protruding part of the bias binding together and then fold it into the oven glove. Sew it firmly there with a few stitches. In this way you have just sewn a loop or hanger from the bias binding.
