What is a patchwork or quilt ruler and how can you use it?

With our tips we show you the correct use of patchwork rulers and make it easier for you to decide which patchwork ruler you need.

The correct measurement is a basic requirement for a satisfactory result in all patchwork and quilting. With the patchwork rulers from Omnigrid, Prym has a wide range of patchwork & quilting rulers in its assortment so that you can find the right ruler for your project. Additional tools and various measuring tapes also make your work easier before and during sewing.



Square rulers:

We offer our square patchwork rulers in cm and inches. They all have a 45° marking, as well as an additional fine grid for better cutting.


Sizes cm: 15 x 15 cm; 20 x20 cm; 31,5 x 31,5 cm

Sizes inch: 4 x 4 inch; 6 x 6 inch; 8 x 8 inch; 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch; 9 ½ x 9 ½ inch; 12 ½ x 12 ½ inch



Cut squares with the patchwork ruler

Place the ruler on the perpendicular edge of the fabric, check the distances using the fine lines and cut your square.

Measure the diagonal with the square patchwork ruler

Place the ruler with the diagonal on the seam of your stitched fabric triangles to cut a square at right angles.

Cut rectangles with the patchwork ruler

Align the ruler with the right angle of your fabric, measure the desired distance and cut along the ruler with the rotary cutter.

Cut the motif with the patchwork ruler

Place the ruler so that the motif is in the center. Mark the cut edge or cut directly along the ruler with the rotary cutter.

How can you prevent your ruler from moving?

Does your ruler slip when you cut? Then you can give it even more stability with self-adhesive ruler stoppers made of silicone.

Nice-to-know: The ruler stoppers can also be used with your own templates to reduce slipping.


Patchwork rulers for cutting triangles

Triangles are indispensable in the field of patchwork & quilting and for this reason we offer different triangular rulers to make cutting easier for you, among other things we have 60° triangles multi in cm and inch, but also 45° degree triangles for ¼ as well as ½ squares in cm and inch in the assortment.

How to cut perfectly with the rulers we explain in the coming steps.


Size 45° triangles for ¼ squares: 20 cm und 8 inch

Size 45° triangles for ½ squares: 15 cm und 6 inch

Size 60° triangles 20 cm und 8 inch



How do you cut with the 60° triangle?

Cut triangles with the 60° triangle ruler:

First define how big you want your triangle to be and then align the bottom line of your triangle with the edge of the fabric. When cutting the triangle, 1.5 cm seam allowance is included on the legs and you can also add 0.75 cm on the bottom.

Cut half triangle with 60° triangle ruler

Align the right angle of your 60° triangle with the right-angled edge of the fabric and then cut the half triangle.

Cutting rhombuses with the 60° triangle ruler

To cut a rhombus, you first need a parallel strip of fabric, then cut half a triangle from the strip and align the desired line of the ruler with the fabric diagonal. Then you can cut your diamond with the rotary cutter.


How do you cut with the 45° triangle?

Cut half-square triangles using the 45° for half triangles.

Align the right-angled side of your triangle with the straight edge of the fabric and then cut your half triangle.

Cut quarter squares with the 45° for quarter triangles

Align the long side of your triangle with the bottom edge of the fabric, according to your desired size, and then cut along the shorter sides of the ruler to make your right triangle.

The Universal Ruler assortment includes a range of rectangular rulers, all of which have parallel lines for measuring the perfect distance. The 15 x 60 cm or 6 ½ x 24 inch ruler also has lines for cutting 30°, 45° and 60° angles.

Parallel Cutting

Align one of the parallel lines of the ruler with your fabric edge, slip the outer edge of the ruler lines until you reach your desired width, then cut your strip along the ruler.

30° Cut with the Universal Ruler

Select the 30° line of your ruler (longest diagonal line) and align it with the bottom edge of your fabric strip, then cut along the long ruler edge.

60° cut with the universal ruler

Align the first shorter diagonal line of your ruler with the bottom edge of your fabric strip, then cut along the long side of your ruler.
